A new garden installation began last week.

This Brooklyn back yard was over-run with weeds in soil that was less than desirable.
The family had two main goals:
1) Useable space for a possible ping-pong table without weeds
2) Raised beds for a mix of edibles

Our solution was to patio a 140 sq foot area of the yard. We leveled and removed as much plant life as possible. A few layers of filter fabrics and weed blockers will help separate below from above and hopefully suppress some of those weeds.

We built three raised beds in the sunniest location with 1x6 cedar rough cut board for a long term and modern / rustic look.
Two large boxes for peas, tomato, pepper & bean plants and a long herb box for quick clippings.
***Very important: When building a raised edible garden, be sure NOT TO USE TREATED LUMBER. There are different kinds of
preservatives used in pressure treated wood including creosote, arsenic
(CCA), copper and other fungicides.
Who knows what is in that kind of wood and you DO NOT want that leaching into your edibles.
Appropriate wood for Raised Beds: Cedar, Black Locust or Redwood
Also consider: Stone

Since New York City is so very cold and has had snow flurries for the past few days, we just filled the boxes with organic soil blends. A few cold starter seeds were popped in but the big planting will happen in the next couple of weeks.
