King Solomon's-seal

Every spring, it's one of a handful of flowers I just can't get enough of.
- Polygonatum or commonly know as Solomon's Seal -
It's delicately scented blooms are almost secretive if you aren't looking for them.

Growing on the under side of an arching main stem, these little white droplets start off as drips of soft white buds.  As they bloom, the green tips flair open, creating a bell like shape.

And another... because I can't edit.

Tulip-o-mania

After planting hundreds upon hundreds of bulbs last fall, we can now enjoy the bounty of our labor.

Deep purple tulips, Queen of the Night, and full white tulips, Francoise, are planted in a front perennial garden to kick start another beautiful season.

Heading into the backyard of this garden, it is all about bursts of color.  Perfect for cutting into arrangements or simply to enjoy.

Chocolate Vines & Hellebores

A newly planted Akebia vine will cover any fence in no time. This variety has deep purple fragrant spring blooms which are just starting to form.
It is one of my favorite twining vines.  Best leaf shape-ever.

Springs newest arrivals

On a protected downtown Manhattan rooftop, we were excited to see what was  popping up.

A periwinkle vinka minor bloom is the first color for this garden.

Raised Vegetable Beds

A new garden installation began last week.

.

This Brooklyn back yard was over-run with weeds in soil that was less than desirable.

The family had two main goals:

1) Useable space for a possible ping-pong table without weeds

          2) Raised beds for a mix of edibles

 Before
.
Our solution was to patio a 140 sq foot area of the yard.  We leveled and removed as much plant life as possible.  A few layers of filter fabrics and weed blockers will help separate below from above and hopefully suppress some of those weeds.

We built three raised beds in the sunniest location with 1x6 cedar rough cut board for a long term and modern / rustic look.
Two large boxes for peas, tomato, pepper & bean plants and a long herb box for quick clippings.

***Very important: When building a raised edible garden, be sure NOT TO USE TREATED LUMBER.  There are different kinds of preservatives used in pressure treated wood including creosote, arsenic (CCA), copper and other fungicides.
Who knows what is in that kind of wood and you DO NOT want that leaching into your edibles.

Appropriate wood for Raised Beds: Cedar, Black Locust or Redwood
Also consider: Stone

Since New York City is so very cold and has had snow flurries for the past few days, we just filled the boxes with organic soil blends.  A few cold starter seeds were popped in but the big planting will happen in the next couple of weeks.

Keep plantings, but if you need help, PLEASE ASK ME!

And can you believe that this set of purple tulips were blooming at this time LAST YEAR?!
It was 70 degrees for most of the week pushing our earliest spring blooms into the late part of
March into early April.

With the snow last night in NYC, it looks as though our spring blooms may arrive a little late this year.

 .

To Do's:  Start your seeds indoors NOW for a kick start to the season!
